MARKET STALL MAKES GLUTEN-FREE LIVING EASIER A shop in Shrewsbury Market Hall which opened twelve weeks ago is continuing to grow. Gluten Free Living, owned by husband and wife team, Mick Wells and Karen Smith-Wells, aims to be a one-stop-shop for coeliacs and those with intolerance to gluten.

All of the products stocked are gluten free.

Gluten Free Living opened with a range of about 70 items, which has now increased to well over 100.

Mick said: “We have established a good regular customer base of people who seem genuinely thankful that we have opened and we try to source any products that are suggested by them. We have also had visitors from places around the UK such as Brighton, Lincoln, and Cambridge and, on a couple of occasions, from Australia and the USA. We are usually asked if we will open a branch in their home towns as, apparently, there is nothing like us there.”

As well as the imported stock, Karen bakes gluten free cakes for sale in the shop each day it is open.

She said: “Saturday is our best day for the cake business, sometimes we can’t keep up with demand. I think that people enjoy having fresh cakes rather than the pre-packed ones that are pleasant but, at the end of the day, have been made with long-life in mind.”

Karen’s baking has been so well received her cakes are now being stocked by a local café, Taste of Shrewsbury, so that they now have something to offer gluten free shoppers who stop for a coffee.

Gluten Free Living can be found at unit 11, on the lower level of the Market Hall.
