Shrewsbury Steam Rally... The Ideal Family Weekend this August Bank Holiday!

This year’s Rally has some new and exciting exhibits and events for visitors and the fantastic spectacle of superb steam engines, and beautifully preserved classic and historic vehicles from yesteryear will be delighting visitors to the County of Salop Steam Engine Society’s Rally which will take place at Onslow Park, (on the Welshpool Road out of Shrewsbury) on Sunday 26th August and Monday 27th August - on the August Bank Holiday.

Why not get yourself a piece of the action at the family-friendly entertainment event, which this year has a new attraction that will guarantee to excite - The spectacular Wall of Death!  ...Europe’s oldest motorcycle sport show and promises to be a real hit!

The main arena cavalcade of magnificent steam engines accompanied by popular, traditional, patriotic music is a sensational spectacle that delights the audience each year. The Rally offers ideal entertainment for the family, with lots of activities to enjoy and it is a lovely way for families to spend the weekend, with excellent refreshments at good-value for money prices.

The Rally showcases an exciting mix of impressive working machines that capture the history and heritage of farming in the Victorian era. Exhibitors breathe new life into the past and demonstrate everything from ploughing by huge steam engines, steam cultivation, corn cutting and harvesting with reaper binders; to chaff cutting and hammer milling involving early tractors and other machines. There is also steam ploughing, wood sawing, stone crushing and teams of shire horses will be ploughing part of the site to complete the spectacle of pastoral delight!  Visitors will be able to take a unique journey back in time when the clock is turned back to Victorian times for two days, in the beautiful farming landscape of Onslow Park! There’s a bee-keeper, wheelwright, corn dolly maker, live blacksmith demonstrations, and cider making, plus some spectacular tractor pulling! Visitors can explore the world of rural Victorian farming with its wonderful original farming skills – and literally live and breathe the past.

The Arena Programme on both days, includes a birds of prey display, moving displays of tractors, historic commercial vehicles, working horses, vintage cycles and perambulators (with the majority of entrants in period costume), pre-and post World War II cars, veteran cars, classic motorcycles and steam cars. Over 1,000 exhibits within the popular Rally area, and for 2012 a new exhibit will be a 1969 BBC Outside Broadcast Van.

There’s plenty of preserved commercial vehicles, lorries, buses and fire engines, steam rollers, traction engines and showmen’s engines. There will be an Olde Time Fair, miniature steam engines, motorcycles, fairground organs, a craft marquee, plenty of refreshments and if you have still got time to spare, there are 6 acres of Trade Stands!
