Great Taste Awards 2012

3rd August 2012

Great Taste Awards 2012 A Shropshire food producer and retailer has won 5 Great Taste Awards including a 3 Star Award for its bacon.

Ludlow Food Centre, in Bromfield Just outside Ludlow, has won awards for its coffee, Victoria Sponge Cake, Lemon Curd, Honey and Gloucester Old Spot Smoked Middle Bacon.  The bacon has proved a hit with judges and has taken one of only 123 coveted 3 Star Awards.  In addition it has been voted a top 50 product in the UK and will go to a grand final in September with the chance of winning a Golden Fork Award, the highest accolade for a food product in the UK.

Its creator and Ludlow Food Centre Butchery Manager, John Brereton says,

‘This is a real honour and we all really excited about what we have achieved, and could yet achieve, in this year’s Great Taste Awards.  We have our own smoker behind the Food Centre and do everything by hand so it’s a credit to the whole butchery team who make our bacon.’

The list of top 50 products was drawn up as part of the Guild of Fine Food’s annual Great Taste accreditation scheme, which saw 8,807 food and drink products blind-tasted and whittled down over the course of 45 days by 350 experts.

The top 50 food and drink products were chosen from the 123 entries that had gained a coveted 3-star gold and each one has now been nominated for a Golden Fork Award, the highest accolade in fine food and drink which will be announced at the Awards’ dinner at London’s Royal Garden Hotel this September.

Judges this year included Masterchef winner and restaurateur Mat Follas, restaurant critic and Masterchef judge Charles Campion, food writers Lucas Hollweg and Xanthe Clay and over 300 food buyers from leading food halls, delicatessens and farm shops, including Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason.

John adds,

‘This particular bacon has already won Best Smoked Bacon in Britain as part of Bacon Connoisseurs Week back in April so we have high hopes for a Gold Fork in September’
